Altitude Training is Key
It’s been proven that even moderate altitudes can have a significantly beneficial effect on athletic performance. The benefits of altitude exposure can improve an athlete’s “capacity to exercise”. Exposing the body to high altitude conditions causes it to acclimatise to “lower oxygen levels” which has the effect of improving oxygen delivery to muscles, thereby enhancing performance through better-oxygenated muscle and organ systems. Endurance can also be enhanced through more efficient oxygen delivery as provoked by high altitude environments. This is an aerobic effect, so exercise should be of an aerobic nature. We produce Erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone which fuels the production of red blood cells. These cells are responsible for conveying oxygen to muscles and organs. During high altitude acclimatisation, the production of these blood cells is upped, thereby enhancing the body’s ability to oxygenate the body’s biology.
In addition, during acclimatisation, the number of small blood vessels also increases in quantity and, also, an intensification in the body’s “buffering capacity” (its ability to manage the waste acid production and build-up). Lastly, high altitude acclimatisation is also responsible for fundamental and significant changes in the function of the muscles microscopic structure, and consequently the efficient function of them.
