Correct Mask Breathing and Valve Progression
Refer to the instructional booklet which came with your mask for correct breathing exercises and tempo’s.
For general exercise, you must not “huff & puff” with the mask. Every breath must be slow and deep. 2-3 seconds breathing in through the nose and 2-3 seconds breathing out through the nose. Your mouth does not open, keep it closed. When you are exercising and cannot maintain this breathing tempo, its time for the mask to come off. Your lungs or body are not coping.
When you first start to use the Elevation Training Mask, use the base (3000Ft) setting and breathe without exercise. When that is comfortable, progress to using it during the warm up phase of your exercise routine only. When you can handle that, start to bring the mask into your workouts for longer and longer periods. When you can do a full workout with the base (3000Ft) setting, then you should consider progressing to the next valve setting.
Fitting The Mask Correctly To Your Face
First thing you need to do is make the mask as loose as comfortably possible when attaching the velcro at the back of your head while still maintaining the air tight seal on your face. Please also use the supplied head strap, which runs across the top of your head to ensure that the neoprene sleeve does not slip off your ears during rigorous exercise.
A seal needs to be created by the rubber of the mask across the bridge of your nose, around your nose and mouth, with the bottom of the rubber mask sitting snugly in the groove between your bottom lip and chin.
NB: The rubber of the mask does not cover the chin. If you have facial hair, this will interfere with the air tight seal of the mask, use vaseline on the facial hair to keep the air tight seal. When the mask is fitted correctly, a slow, deep breath in and out will allow you to hear the characteristic sound of the mask valves as the air passes through them. No valve sounds may be due to losing the air tight seal as air seeps in through the sides of the mask.
